§ 1 — Meaning of the string Q118·Q120
"owl" refers to a nocturnal bird of prey (order Strigiformes) known for large forward-facing eyes, silent flight, and wide global distribution.
/aʊl/
§ 2 — Mission and purpose Q133
The mission of the TLD is to create a distinctive digital space for the global owl community, bringing together owl enthusiasts, fans, researchers, conservation advocates, educators, and organizations connected to owls. It is intended to serve as a memorable and meaningful namespace for people and entities that share an interest in owls, whether for fun, scientific, educational, cultural, or community-oriented purposes.
The primary registrants and users of owl are expected to include individual owl fans, ornithologists, wildlife researchers, conservation groups, zoos, bird sanctuaries, educational institutions, publishers, online communities, and businesses or initiatives with a connection to owls. The namespace may also be used by projects focused on owl observation, species protection, biodiversity, environmental awareness, and public education. In addition, it can support personal websites, fan pages, event pages, and digital platforms that seek to connect people with owl-related content or activities.
The purpose of the TLD is to provide a clear, recognizable online identity that reflects the theme of owls and helps users easily identify relevant content and services. By using a dedicated and thematic domain, registrants can strengthen visibility, credibility, and engagement within the owl-focused ecosystem. The TLD therefore shall serve not only as a digital home for owl fans, as a branding tool, but also as a digital meeting point for a distributed global audience with shared interests.
To achieve this purpose, outreach activities will focus on both digital and in-person engagement with the global owl community. Digital outreach may include community websites, social media campaigns, newsletters, educational content, partnerships with owl-related online forums, and direct engagement with researchers, conservation networks, and fan communities. In-person outreach may include participation in birdwatching events, wildlife conferences, educational programs, museum collaborations, conservation gatherings, and other relevant community activities. These efforts are intended to build awareness of the namespace, encourage appropriate use, and support a vibrant and active owl community over time.
The purpose of the TLD is sustainable over time because the owl community is broad, global, and ongoing, spanning fans, researchers, educators, conservation groups, and wildlife organizations. Interest in owls is not tied to a short-term trend. Historical records show that owls have already been symbolically significant in multiple ancient cultures, including as a symbol of wisdom in ancient Greece and as a meaningful hieroglyphic and cultural symbol in ancient Egypt. Interest can be supported by long-term activities such as research, education, species protection, birdwatching, and public outreach. The TLD can remain relevant by serving as a stable, memorable online home for these connected audiences and by adapting its outreach through both digital channels and in-person events. This creates a durable ecosystem of use cases that can grow and evolve while remaining centered on the same core theme.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
