§ 1 — Meaning of the string Q118·Q120

“CLI” is an acronym for “command-line interface,” a text-based method of interacting with computer systems and software by entering commands.

/ˌsiː ɛl ˈaɪ/

§ 2 — Mission and purpose Q133

The mission of the .cli gTLD is to establish a trusted, recognisable and relevant namespace for the global command-line interface and terminal ecosystem.

The .cli gTLD is intended to support developers, system administrators, technology companies, open-source projects, educators and users who create, provide or use command-line tools and services. It will provide a clear digital identity for websites, software documentation, developer resources, APIs, package repositories, technical support, training materials and other services associated with command-line technologies.

The purpose of .cli is to make CLI-related content and services easier to identify, locate and trust. By using a concise and meaningful domain extension, registrants will be able to communicate an immediate connection to command-line software, developer tooling and technical infrastructure.

Overall, .cli is intended to serve as a dedicated online home for the command-line ecosystem and to support innovation, education, collaboration and access to reliable technical resources.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.

The applying entity intends for .cli to serve as a trusted, secure and globally relevant namespace for the command-line interface ecosystem.

The .cli gTLD is designed for developers, system administrators, technology companies, open-source projects, educators, researchers and other individuals or organisations that create, provide, document or use command-line tools and services. Potential uses may include software documentation, developer resources, technical support, training materials, package repositories, APIs, product information, community projects and other content connected to command-line technologies.

The registry will be operated in accordance with applicable ICANN policies, the Registry Agreement and relevant legal requirements. Appropriate registration policies, rights-protection mechanisms, abuse-prevention procedures and security measures will be implemented to support the stability, integrity and responsible use of the namespace.

The applying entity believes that .cli will provide a concise and meaningful digital identity for the global command-line ecosystem, improve the discoverability of CLI-related content and services, and support innovation, education and collaboration across the technology sector.
