§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

The .neumann top-level domain is a brand TLD operated by Georg Neumann GmbH for the exclusive use of the applicant and its affiliates. Its mission is to establish a verifiably authentic, brand-controlled namespace under the NEUMANN trademark that serves as an authoritative point of reference for everyone who interacts with the brand online.

The central purpose of the TLD is verifiable authenticity of origin. A domain name ending in .neumann can only exist if the brand owner has registered it. This makes the authenticity of a domain immediately recognizable, for customers, partners, employees, and increasingly for automated systems, without the need to verify individual web addresses one by one. It directly reduces the effectiveness of phishing, impersonation, and look-alike domains that today rely on confusable second-level names registered under open TLDs by unrelated parties.

Registrations in the TLD are limited to the applicant and its affiliates. There is no sale, distribution, or transfer of domain names to unaffiliated third parties, and there is no open or public registration. Domain names are allocated internally in accordance with the applicant's own naming and governance policies, so that every name in the zone corresponds to an official function of the brand. This gives the applicant full and lasting control over the integrity of the namespace.

The TLD is intended for official brand purposes across the organization. Typical uses include corporate and product communication, customer-facing services and support, professional and business-to-business offerings, marketing initiatives, and technical or infrastructure services such as application endpoints and authenticated communication. Because the entire namespace is under the brand owner's control, it can be operated as a coherent and consistently structured environment, rather than as a collection of defensively registered names distributed across third-party TLDs.

For the public, the value of the TLD lies in certainty of origin. Anyone encountering a .neumann domain can be certain that it is operated by the brand owner and its affiliates, which supports safer and better-informed interactions with the brand, its products, and its services, and which helps protect customers against deception by unrelated parties.

The mission also reflects how authenticity of origin is established in an environment increasingly shaped by automated and AI-based systems. Such systems rely on clear and consistent entity identity to determine whether a source is authoritative. A closed brand namespace provides stable, machine-readable signals of origin that reinforce the brand as an authoritative and unambiguous source of information, products, and services, and that strengthen the applicant's ability to protect its brand and its customers against fraud and misuse.

The applicant intends to operate the TLD on a long-term and stable basis as a core component of its brand, security, and digital identity strategy, and is committed to maintaining the registry in accordance with all applicable ICANN requirements and the Registry Agreement throughout its term.

Déclaration Spec 11 §3(d) Q184

The applied-for string .neumann corresponds to the registered trademark NEUMANN, owned by the applicant, Georg Neumann GmbH, under which it has manufactured studio microphones and professional audio equipment for decades. NEUMANN functions as a source-identifying trademark, not as a generic term.

.neumann will be operated as a closed brand TLD. All domains will be registered to and used exclusively by the applicant and its affiliates. No domains will be sold, licensed, or made available to unaffiliated third parties, and there will be no open or public registration.

Section 3(d) of Specification 11 restricts the closed operation of generic strings: it prevents a registry operator from using eligibility criteria to limit registrations in a generic-term TLD exclusively to itself or its affiliates. That restriction is directed at strings that carry a generic meaning capturing a class of goods, services, or interests. .neumann is not such a string. It is a trademark, not a generic term, and confers no generic or descriptive advantage. Operating it exclusively for the brand owner therefore withholds no generic resource from the market and produces none of the harms Section 3(d) is designed to prevent.

Operating .neumann exclusively for the brand owner therefore creates none of the harms Section 3(d) is designed to prevent and gives rise to no conflict with Section 3(d) of Specification 11.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
