§ 1 — Sens de la chaîne Q118·Q120

Gen is an English morpheme and abbreviation meaning: generation; generative; genesis — denoting origin, creation, and that which is new or next ("next-gen").

dʒɛn

§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

The .gen gTLD will provide a short, globally pronounceable, semantically rich namespace for brands, creators, and businesses. "Gen" carries layered meaning across languages and audiences: generations, including the demographic identities and "next-generation" branding that renew with every cohort; the generative technologies reshaping software and media; genomics and the life sciences; and the universal sense of origin and creation (genesis, generate). This breadth makes .gen a durable, general-purpose brandable domain rather than a single-trend string, suitable for startups, consumer brands, demographic-focused media and communities, biotech ventures, and AI-era products alike. The TLD will operate as an open registry with accessible standard pricing, multi-year registration options, and a premium program for high-value labels. The applicant group's retail channel provides immediate distribution to the audience of new website creators and small businesses that short brandable TLDs serve best, with additional distribution through ICANN-accredited registrars on non-discriminatory terms. The registry will benefit Internet users by expanding the supply of short, memorable, meaningful names, a resource effectively exhausted in legacy TLDs. This purpose is sustainable over time: each meaning of "gen" renews independently, as new generations are named every decade and new technologies and ventures continually adopt the prefix, providing a registrant base that does not depend on any single trend.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
