§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133
Mission
The mission of the .mem gTLD is to provide a trusted, secure, and recognizable namespace dedicated to digital memorialization, remembrance, legacy preservation, and related commemorative experiences. The Registry intends to support innovative digital services that enable individuals, families, organizations, and participating service providers to create meaningful online destinations associated with remembrance and memorial-related activities.
The Registry expects domain names to be registered by eligible individuals, organizations, and service providers that satisfy the Registry's published registration policies. Registrations will be made available through ICANN-accredited registrars that elect to participate in the Registry's registration program. Eligibility requirements will be applied in a transparent, objective, and non-discriminatory manner consistent with the Registry Agreement.
The Registry anticipates that domain names may be used in connection with a variety of memorial-related offerings, including personalized online experiences, commemorative resources, legacy preservation services, family engagement tools, and future digital products developed over time. The Registry's goal is to establish .mem as a trusted namespace that promotes authenticity, reliability, and long-term accessibility for memorial-related digital services while allowing continued innovation as technology and user expectations evolve.
Sustainability
The Registry believes the purpose of the .mem gTLD is sustainable because the need for memorialization, remembrance, and legacy preservation is enduring and exists across generations, cultures, and geographic regions. As digital services continue to become an increasingly important part of how individuals preserve memories and commemorate significant life events, demand for trusted online memorial-related experiences is expected to continue evolving.
By operating the registry as a secure and policy-driven namespace with clearly defined eligibility requirements, while allowing new memorial-related products and services to be introduced over time, the Registry will be able to expand offerings and adapt to changing technologies without altering the underlying mission of the TLD.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
