§ 1 — Sens de la chaîne Q118·Q120

"Act" means to do something or take a step to achieve a purpose; it also means to perform a role in a play, film, or other dramatic work.

/ækt/

§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

1. Describe the mission and purpose of the applied-for gTLD. .act helps advocacy campaigns, civic organizations, and performing arts talent create a clear and memorable online presence for the work of mobilizing people and staging performances, making it easier to be understood and acted upon the moment someone arrives. It turns a web address into a direct invitation, so supporters know how to get involved and audiences know what they are about to experience.

Intended Registrants: Advocacy groups, nonprofits, campaigns, and civic organizations mobilizing supporters; performing arts entities including theaters, drama schools, actors, casting studios, and production companies; and businesses or programs built around initiative, response, and getting things done.

Intended Users: Supporters and volunteers responding to a cause, audiences and talent connecting with performing arts work, and everyday visitors following a clear prompt to participate, register, contribute, or engage.

Related Activities Supporting the Purpose: To support the namespace, registry operations would emphasize: • Awareness-building among advocacy, civic, and performing arts communities • Registrar distribution so the string is easy to find and register through mainstream channels • Registrant education on pairing verbs and calls to participation with the .act suffix (for example, join.act, vote.act, cast.act) • Community outreach to nonprofits, arts organizations, and campaign networks • Responsible registry operations aligned with standard industry practice

The purpose is to give these registrants a memorable online presence that carries meaning in the name alone. A construction such as "climate.act" or "stage.act" communicates intent before a page even loads, helping an organization stand out online and helping visitors immediately understand what they are being asked to do or what they are about to see. For an individual performer, name.act turns a personal brand into a recognizable presence that signals a profession in a single syllable.

2. Explain how this purpose is sustainable over time. The durability of .act rests on a recurring social dynamic: organized life advances through moments where people are asked to move from watching to participating. Causes need supporters to respond. Communities need members to show up. Productions need audiences to arrive and performers to step onto a stage. Every election, fundraising drive, membership renewal, protest, season launch, casting call, and opening night restarts the same rhythm of appeal and response. The act of participating is renewed by each generation on its own terms. A civic campaign in one decade and a mutual-aid network in the next differ in tools and language, yet both depend on the same pivot from sentiment to involvement. The performing arts follow a parallel pattern: the discipline of embodying a role and presenting it to an audience has carried across oral traditions, staged theater, cinema, and streamed performance without losing its core. The medium shifts; the practice of acting does not disappear. The concept resists being replaced because it names a threshold rather than a technology. Participation and performance are outcomes people organize toward, not features that become obsolete. A word that captures the decisive step, do this, join this, watch this, perform this, stays useful precisely because the step keeps being asked for. Because .act sits at the point where interest becomes commitment, its relevance is renewed by the very activity it describes.
