§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

The mission of the .sov top-level domain is to provide a short, memorable namespace for technology companies, developers, and builders. The string .sov is a short form of sovereign, chosen primarily for its brevity, sound, and brandability. In the tradition of TLDs such as .io and .xyz, which originated with narrow or unrelated meanings and became widely adopted across the technology sector as flexible, general-purpose naming options, .sov is intended to serve as a distinctive namespace for the technology community.

.sov is intended for technology companies and builders of all kinds, including startups, software products, developer tools, and technology platforms. The registry does not intend to restrict registration to any particular subset of the technology industry, and anticipates .sov will be used broadly by companies, products, and individual developers seeking a short, brandable, tech-forward domain name. The TLD is associated with independence and self-direction, qualities that resonate broadly with founders and builders; .sov is intended to carry that tone in the same everyday branding sense that many companies draw on evocative words that rally consumers around a commonly held values.

The purpose of .sov is intended to be sustainable because: (1) demand for short, tech-associated domain names has grown substantially, as demonstrated by the adoption patterns of .io and .xyz; (2) the registry is designed around a premium pricing model intended to support long-term financial viability; and (3) the namespace is not tied to any single technology vertical, supporting broad and durable adoption across the technology sector over time.

.sov is intended to add a meaningful, purpose-driven namespace to the DNS ecosystem, reflecting the interests of a global technology and developer community.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
