§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133
The mission of the .yam gTLD is to establish a distinctive, memorable, and globally accessible namespace that individuals, businesses, organizations, and other lawful users can adopt for a broad range of online identities and activities.
Although “yam” has recognized dictionary meanings, .yam is not intended to represent or be limited to any particular meaning, product category, industry, geographic area, community, company, brand, trademark, or trademark owner. The applicant selected .yam because it is a short, pronounceable, memorable, and brandable combination of letters suitable for use as a flexible, general-purpose domain extension.
The purpose of .yam is to provide registrants with an alternative namespace in which they can create distinctive domain names for websites, businesses, products, services, projects, portfolios, communities, marketing initiatives, informational resources, and other lawful digital uses.
Intended registrants include individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, creators, associations, and other entities seeking a short and versatile domain extension. Intended users include Internet users worldwide who may access or interact with websites, email addresses, and other services associated with .yam domain names.
.yam is intended to operate as an open, general-purpose gTLD. It is not intended exclusively for registrants involved with yams, food, agriculture, or any other particular subject matter. Registrations are expected to be made available through ICANN-accredited registrars, subject to applicable laws, ICANN requirements, and registry and registrar policies.
To achieve its mission and purpose, the applicant intends to:
Establish and maintain secure, stable, and resilient registry operations consistent with ICANN requirements and applicable technical standards.
Make .yam domain registrations available through a broad network of ICANN-accredited registrars.
Promote awareness of .yam as a distinctive and flexible namespace through registrar engagement, marketing, educational materials, and other appropriate outreach.
Encourage diverse lawful uses without unnecessarily restricting the namespace to a particular market, industry, meaning, or category of registrant.
Maintain policies and operational practices addressing DNS abuse, intellectual-property protections, registration data, security, and other obligations established by the Registry Agreement and applicable ICANN Consensus Policies.
Through these activities, .yam is intended to develop as a recognizable, versatile, and broadly applicable namespace that enables registrants to create distinctive online identities without imposing a predetermined meaning or specialized purpose on the string.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
