The mission of .gem is to provide an open, distinctive and adaptable digital namespace for uses connected with gemstones, jewelry, design and collecting, and for broader uses inspired by the figurative meaning of “gem” as something valued, distinctive or noteworthy.
The .gem gTLD is intended to support websites, brands, products, services, creative works, content and projects. It gives registrants a clear and memorable online identity while remaining relevant across sectors and evolving digital uses.
Registration or use of a .gem domain name does not constitute verification or endorsement of a registrant or of the authenticity, quality, origin or value of any related product or service.
Purposes
1. Provide a clear and memorable digital identity for gemstone, jewelry, design, collecting and related activities.
2. Support branding, creative, cultural, educational, commercial and project-based uses drawing on the figurative meaning of “gem.”
3. Improve the discoverability of relevant websites, products, services, content and projects.
4. Maintain an open and adaptable namespace as technologies and online practices evolve.
Intended Registrants
Primary intended registrants include:
1. Individuals and entities involved in gemstones, jewelry, design, collecting, retail, education, culture and related products or services.
2. Creators, designers, brands, businesses, professionals and project operators seeking a distinctive online identity.
3. Service providers, platforms and organizations offering relevant tools, information, education, logistics, technology or support.
4. Other individuals and entities wishing to use “gem” figuratively for a lawful brand, work, place, idea, product, service or project.
These categories describe principal intended uses and are not exclusive eligibility requirements. Subject to applicable requirements and published policies, .gem domain names may support a broad range of lawful uses.
Intended Users
Intended users include Internet users seeking gemstone and jewelry-related products, services, designs, information and collecting resources, as well as distinctive brands, creative works, educational content, cultural resources and other projects presented under the broader meaning of “gem.” Users remain responsible for evaluating the information, products and services they encounter.
Implementation Activities
The registry plans to:
1. Offer registrations through ICANN-accredited registrars in accordance with applicable launch and rights-protection requirements.
2. Publish registration, renewal, dispute and abuse-reporting policies.
3. Conduct general awareness and outreach among relevant businesses, professionals, creators, organizations, platforms and users.
4. Address security and abuse matters in accordance with applicable ICANN requirements, registry policies and available evidence.
These activities describe the registry’s general operating approach and do not guarantee registration volume, market adoption or specific commercial outcomes.
Long-Term Sustainability
The long-term relevance of .gem is supported by the established meaning of “gem” and its use in literal and figurative contexts. Potential applications extend across gemstones, jewelry, design, collecting, culture, education, branding, creative content and other digital activities.
The registry’s financial model is based principally on registration and renewal revenue, supported by prudent cost management and financial planning. Relevant assumptions, costs and risks are addressed in the financial materials submitted with the application.
The registry intends to operate .gem as a long-term digital namespace and maintain its security, stability and relevance as user needs and online practices evolve.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others.
