Fiche ICANN ↗

§ 1 — Sens de la chaîne Q118·Q120

The string "usc" has no meaning in English language. In this instance it is the common acronym for the University of South Carolina.

/ˌjuː.esˈsiː/

§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

The mission of the .usc TLD is to advance and support the educational, research, public services, and outreach mission of the University of South Carolina by cultivating a connected, trusted, and secure digital community of educators, researchers, students, alumni, and authorized partners under a single, authoritative online identity.

As the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina system, the University is committed to educating students through outstanding teaching and to advancing research, scholarship, and service that benefit the state, nation, and world. The .usc TLD will serve as a digital extension of that mission by uniting the University's faculty, staff, students, alumni, and affiliated programs within a shared and authentic online space—one designed to foster communication, collaboration, and networking across the entire Carolinian community. Through the .usc TLD, the University can strengthen relationships among its members and provide a reliable channel for delivering trusted information, academic resources, research initiatives, public engagement activities, alumni relations, and institutional communications.

The .usc TLD will operate as a closed dotBrand registry under the exclusive control of the University of South Carolina. Domain names within the .usc TLD will be registered only to the University and affiliated entities authorized by the University. This model ensures that every website, email communication, and digital service operating under .usc is authentic, verifiable, and unmistakably connected to the University, reinforcing user trust and safeguarding the community against fraud, impersonation, and misinformation.

By developing this community-driven digital environment, the University intends for the .usc TLD to strengthen its institutional identity, protect the University's brand and reputation, enhance cybersecurity and user confidence, improve navigability of University resources, and support innovation in teaching, research, student engagement, and lifelong alumni connection. The TLD will provide a durable platform through which educators, researchers, students, and alumni can communicate, network, share and access trusted information, and remain meaningfully engaged with the University, ensuring that members of the community, prospective students, donors, research partners, and the public can confidently identify official University resources and communications.
