A trademark on an interjection

Booking.com files .yeah as a closed brand TLD; an Identity Digital affiliate files it as an open generic. Same string, two readings of what a word is.

Two applications ask for .yeah. They are alone in ICANN contention set 260, and they disagree on the most basic point: whether "yeah" is a word.

Booking.com: it is our brand

Booking.com B.V. files .yeah as a brand TLD Q179. Its definition of the string:

YEAH is an extension of our core brand that has been used in mass global marketing campaigns for over a decade. It is supported by Booking.com’s Swiss trademark registration for YEAH, as well as additional trademark registrations for BOOKING.YEAH. Q118

The registry would be closed: "all domain registrations will be restricted to organisations within our corporate group and, potentially, to licensees of our trademarks" Q133. The filing confirms that the string is not a "generic string" Q183 and states why: it "corresponds to a brand with a registered trademark and thus is not a “Generic String” as defined in Specification 11, Section 3(d)" Q184. A trademark certificate is attached Q181; ICANN does not publish attachments.

Booking.com declares that it is already "the Registry Operator for the existing .booking and .hotels TLDs" Q12, and that it is ultimately controlled by Booking Holdings Inc. Q108.

Toddler Logic: it is a word

Toddler Logic, LLC, a Delaware company, files .yeah as an open, standard TLD: not a brand Q179, no exemption requested Q185. Its definition:

Yeah commonly refers to a broadly recognized term used across a wide range of contexts. Q118

And its mission: "to provide a namespace associated with the applied-for string", for registrants "that identify with, relate to, or wish to be associated with the concept represented by the applied-for string" Q133.

The filing declares the applicant to be an affiliate of Identity Digital Limited, "an ICANN pre-approved back-end registry service provider" Q14, and of six existing registry operators, among them Identity Digital Domains Limited and HOTEL Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l. Q12. Ultimate control is declared as Ethos Capital Digital Infrastructure UGP LLC Q108. It is the only one of the two to declare a replacement string, .prototype, still active on 7 October. Toddler Logic files 19 applications in this round; 28 applicant names declare the same ultimate control, for 216 applications in all.

The question the two filings put to ICANN

The application form itself states the rule, in the wording of its question 121 Q121:

As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates”

A brand TLD limits registrations in just that way, and a brand applicant is asked to confirm that its string is not generic Q183.

Here the same four letters are declared a registered trademark by one applicant and a "broadly recognized term" by the other. Neither filing mentions the other. Neither offers voluntary safeguard commitments Q170 or Registry Voluntary Commitments Q172.

The hotel thread

Both applicants already sit near each other in the root, by their own declarations: Booking.com operates .hotels, and Toddler Logic lists HOTEL Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l. among its affiliates Q12. The history of the .hotel and .hotels applications in the 2012 round is being documented from ICANN's records; until it is, this piece says nothing about it.

What this piece does not say

Which reading prevails is for ICANN's process to settle: string evaluation, any objection, and the contention set as it stands after String Confirmation Day on 17 November 2026. We do not forecast it.
