§ 1 — Sens de la chaîne Q118·Q120

MCP means Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting artificial intelligence systems with external systems, tools, data, and services.

ɛm si pi

§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

Mission and Purpose The .mcp namespace offers a recognizable web address built around "MCP," a term used for Model Context Protocol and associated with connecting artificial intelligence models to tools, data, services, and other resources. A name on .mcp gives a registrant a clear, memorable identity associated with that function and the ecosystem developing around it.

The purpose is to make available an open namespace that organizations and individuals may use for an online presence related to MCP, model connectivity, integrations, developer tools, or other purposes for which they find the term relevant. An MCP server, developer resource, integration, service, documentation site, directory, or company's chosen destination on .mcp becomes a recognizable name.

For registrants working with AI systems, .mcp offers an identity that can reflect the tools, services, and resources through which models interact with external systems. Other registrants may use .mcp for related technical resources or because the term suits the identity they want to create. The namespace does not depend on any particular implementation, model, platform, provider, or use case.

Intended Registrants .mcp will operate on an open registration model, available to any registrant without eligibility restrictions and without conditions tied to any particular company, industry, technology, platform, or use. Registrants are likely to include, but are in no way limited to, developers and companies building MCP servers and integrations, artificial intelligence and software companies, platform and infrastructure providers, enterprises connecting models with internal or external systems, developer-tool providers, researchers, and open-source communities. Uses of .mcp are similarly open and are not limited to any particular model, protocol implementation, platform, provider, tool, or subject matter.

Related Activities Supporting the Purpose - Awareness-building among the developer, artificial intelligence, and technology communities most likely to find the namespace useful - Broad registrar distribution to make .mcp names widely available - Registrant education on the availability and use of .mcp names - Community outreach through developer, artificial intelligence, integration, and open-source ecosystems - Responsible registry operations, including standard abuse mitigation and registration policies

Sustainability .mcp is durable because it is tied to the continuing need for artificial intelligence systems to interact with tools, data, services, and other resources rather than to a single product, model, or vendor. As AI systems become more capable and are used across more applications, the mechanisms through which they connect with external systems are likely to remain an important part of how those systems are developed and operated. The relevance of the namespace therefore does not depend on any one model, platform, implementation, or provider.

As the ecosystem of tools, integrations, services, and resources used with AI systems continues to develop, organizations and individuals may continue to find a clear, dedicated .mcp identity useful. OpenAI has the operational, technical, and financial capacity to run the registry over the long term, consistent with the commitments described elsewhere in this application, and will continue to adapt registrant services and policies as the space develops.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
