Fiche ICANN ↗

§ 1 — Sens de la chaîne Q118·Q120

Agent is a person or system that acts on behalf of another to perform tasks, provide services, or achieve a goal.

eɪdʒənt

§ 2 — Mission et objet Q133

Mission and Purpose The .agent namespace offers a recognizable web address built around "agent," a term widely used for software that can act on a user's behalf, as well as in its broader everyday senses. A name on .agent gives a registrant a clear, memorable identity that reflects that meaning. The purpose is to make available an open namespace that many kinds of registrants may find useful for an online presence. An assistant, a developer resource, a product page, or a company's chosen destination on .agent becomes a recognizable name. For registrants whose work involves software agents, the namespace offers an identity that reflects what they do. For others, "agent" carries its own familiar meanings. In every case, the value of the namespace is the clarity and appeal of the term itself, available to any registrant who wants to make use of it.

Intended Registrants .agent will operate on an open registration model, available to any registrant without eligibility restrictions and without conditions tied to any particular company, industry, technology, or use. Registrants are likely to include, but are in no way limited to, software developers and companies building AI agents, platform providers offering agent orchestration or hosting, enterprises deploying internal or customer-facing agents, and researchers and open-source communities working on agentic frameworks. Uses of .agent are similarly open and not limited to any specific model, platform, provider, or subject matter.

Related Activities Supporting the Purpose Awareness-building among the developer and technology communities most likely to find the namespace useful - Broad registrar distribution to make .agent names widely available - Registrant education on the availability and use of .agent names - Community outreach through developer and open-source ecosystems - Responsible registry operations, including standard abuse mitigation and registration policies

Sustainability Over Time .agent is durable because it is tied to a broadly used term rather than a single product or vendor. Interest in software agents is growing, and "agent" also carries long-established meaning in everyday language, so the term's appeal does not depend on any one company, technology, or trend. The namespace stays relevant regardless of which specific models, frameworks, or vendors lead at any given moment. As interest in the term grows, so does the pool of registrants who may find a .agent name useful, which sustains demand for the namespace over time. OpenAI has the operational, technical, and financial capacity to run the registry over the long term, consistent with the commitments described elsewhere in this application, and will continue to adapt registrant services and policies as the space develops.

Q121As per Section 3(d) of Specification 11 of the Base Registry Agreement, a registry operator of a “generic string” may not impose eligibility criteria for registering names in the TLD that limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity and/or that person’s or entity’s “Affiliates” (as defined in Section 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement). “Generic String” means a string consisting of a word or term that denominates or describes a general class of goods, services, groups, organizations or things, as opposed to distinguishing a specific brand of goods, services, groups, organizations or things from those of others. Confirm that the applied-for string is not a “generic string” in which the applying entity intends to limit registrations exclusively to a single person or entity.
